Press and hold the "Shift" key, then press and hold the hyphen "-" key, located two keys to the left of "Backspace" on a PC or "Delete" on a Mac. This creates a solid, horizontal straight line. Release the hyphen key to stop the line.

Oh, very droll. According to Character Map it's called VERTICAL LINE. It's actually on my keyboard in 2 places - Shift-\ (left of Z in a UK layout) and there's a key to the left of 1 with `, ¬ and | on it - hold AltGr while pressing this second key.
